Only 28 percent of Americans agreed with President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement, according to The Washington Post/ABC News poll released Monday.
Fifty-nine percent opposed the move, while 47 percent said his decision will do more to cost U.S. jobs. Additionally, 51 percent said the president's decision will hurt international efforts to address climate change, and 55 percent said it would hurt the U.S. leadership in the world.
Former President Barack Obama signed the pact in 2015, along with 194 leaders of other nations. Trump announced Thursday the U.S. would withdraw from the agreement because it imposed unfair environmental standards on American businesses and workers.
"I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris," said the president, who drew support from members of his party but widespread criticism from environmentalists, political leaders, and business executives from around the world.
Sixty-percent of Republicans support Trump's action, but only 22 percent of Independents and 8 percent of Democrats agreed with it.
