Georgia Rep. Paul Broun, a GOP candidate for the Senate, took aim Wednesday at potential Democratic opponent Michelle Nunn, hammering the political newcomer for her "radical leftist mentality" and declaring she "cannot win this race."
"A Democrat is going to find it very difficult, if not downright impossible, to win this U.S. Senate race," Broun told
The Hill.
Broun blasted Nunn — daughter of former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn — for her appearance last month at a fundraiser in New York for female Senate candidates, which first lady Michelle Obama headlined.
"I'm told Michelle Nunn was at a fundraiser with Michelle Obama ... who said she wanted to elect her so they could be certain to continue to force Obamacare down the throats of the American people," he said.
"That's not going to fly in Georgia. Not with Democrats, Republicans, independents, anybody. Michelle Nunn cannot win this race with that radical leftist mentality."
Broun is facing seven other Republicans in the GOP primary, and has mostly focused his campaign on those opponents, The Hill noted. The race will determine the successor to the seat being
vacated by Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Georgia is one of two states Democrats hope to pick up in 2014, but the Republican lean makes it a long shot, The Hill noted.
Though Nunn has raised $2 million so far in her first-ever campaign, according to
Georgia Public Broadcasting, Republicans believe
President Obama's unpopularity and issues with the healthcare reform law will help sink her candidacy.
