U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said on Thursday there was no deal reached between President Donald Trump and congressional Democratic leaders on a program to protect people brought into the United States illegally.

"There is no agreement," Ryan told reporters when asked about the Republican president's discussions on Wednesday night with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

He said Trump and White House chief of staff John Kelly called him from Air Force One on Thursday "to discuss what was discussed" between Trump and the Democrats . "It was a discussion not an agreement or a negotiation."
