House Speaker Paul Ryan pushed back Saturday on Donald Trump's accusations that the 2016 election is being "rigged" by the news media to benefit Hillary Clinton.

AshLee Strong, spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Republican, posted this on Twitter Saturday afternoon:

At a rally in Maine, Trump made his strongest accusation to date about the status of the election, charging that the press was working with Clinton to get the Democrat elected on Nov. 8.

He referenced accusations this week by as many as nine women who say that Trump has either assaulted or made unwanted sexual advances toward them.

The Republican nominee also made the charges on Twitter earlier Saturday.

"The election is being rigged by corrupt media pushing false allegations and outright lies in an effort to elect Hillary Clinton president," Trump told supporters at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. "But we are going to stop it.

"We are not going to back down.

"It's a rigged system — and they take these lies and they put them on front pages," Trump said. "This is a rigged system, folks.

"But we're not going to let it happen."
