Others go to the cupboard where they store last year’s fruitcake and pull one out for a little regifting, ending up with egg on their faces. Well, not really, except in a spoof Web video the conservative group
Citizens United rolled out for the holidays as Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California retained a leadership position in the House, albeit as a minority leader.
Citizens United’s website explains its three videos, “We are having a little early holiday fun with the fact that Democrats are regifting Nancy Pelosi as their leader once again in the House of Representatives. Pelosi as Democrat Minority Leader is as popular as a Christmas fruitcake – and nobody wants a fruitcake. In fact, Nancy Pelosi is only 1% more popular than fruitcake according to public opinion polls!”
The group even fashioned a
Pelosi fruitcake website all its own.
All humor aside, news reports in media of all stripes, and backroom gossip, show that Pelosi’s election was about as popular with many of her party colleagues as of one of those much-maligned fruitcakes under a Christmas tree. Indeed, it occurred only after a Pelosi smackdown during a caucus of venting rebellion that took her six hours to quell.
How do some Democrats themselves feel? Washington Post Op-Ed columnist Dana Milbank chronicles these comments from Democrats:
- "The truth is that Nancy Pelosi's season has passed," said Rep. Allen Boyd (Fla.), one of more than 60 Democrats who lost their seats on Election Day. "And she is the face of defeat."
- "When you have taken the largest losses of any majority in my lifetime," said Rep. Peter DeFazio (Ore.), who led an effort to postpone a vote on Pelosi's leadership bid, it's "time for reflection to better understand the reason for those losses."
- And Rep. Bill Pascrell (N.J.), who called himself "one of Nancy Pelosi's closest friends here in the Congress," said that by holding Wednesday's vote to keep Pelosi as leader, Democrats "missed an opportunity today to send a signal to America that we understand what happened this past election."
Thus, Citizens United suggests sending a fruitcake as a signal. The recipe includes, among other things, a half-pound of delusion, 2 cups of liberalism, 6 Obama policies, 4 tablespoons of Rangel ethics, and a half-pound of backroom deals, etc.
