South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg appeared to throw a police officer from his city under the bus during Thursday night's Democratic presidential debate.
When asked about a recent deadly shooting of a black man by a white police officer in South Bend, Buttigieg called the situation a "mess" and pointed out that the officer's body camera was not turned on.
"A black man, Eric Logan, killed by a white officer," Buttigieg said. "I'm not allowed to take sides until the investigation comes back. The officer said he was attacked with a knife, but he didn't have his body camera on.
"It's a mess. We are hurting."
Body cameras are a new tool in most police forces around the country and must manually turned on by the officers. Dashboard-mounted cameras in police cars generally turn on when the emergency lights or siren are activated.
