Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said Tuesday he thinks recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program would make "great Peace Corps volunteers in" their home countries.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced earlier Tuesday that President Donald Trump was ending DACA and giving Congress six months to decide what happens to the 800,000-plus young people who were brought into the U.S. as children and allowed to remain.
"To have a lawful system of immigration that serves the national interest, we cannot admit everyone who would like to come here," Sessions said. "It's just that simple. That would be an open-border policy, and the American people have rightly rejected that."
King earlier criticized Trump for the move after Politico announced the president would end the program, and called it "Republican suicide." His suggestion, though, would mean the Peace Corps would have to change its rules as members need to be U.S. citizens in order to serve in the volunteer program.
