Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., called on President Donald Trump to declassify and release documents related to the start of the Russia investigation involving secret warrants to spy on certain members of the Trump campaign.
"Absolutely, he should declassify it immediately," said King, who has seen the supporting documents and the FISA warrants themselves, during an interview with The Hill. "I am not certain why he changed his mind last week. He said it involved allies. There could be some allies who are sensitive that maybe some things were done within their territory, but there is nothing there that would really hurt any foreign government.
"I think the FBI and the Justice Department separately and together did not disclose all the information they had — exculpatory evidence, they didn't give the full background on issues involving Christopher Steele, involving the [Trump] dossier, involving others, which I really can't get into now.
"When it's out there, I think fair-minded people will say, they withheld very, very important evidence."
Trump recently ordered the DOJ to declassify and release several of the documents related to the Russia probe, which since May 2017 has been spearheaded by special counsel Robert Mueller. Days later, however, he said certain government officials and U.S. allies have pushed back on the release.
