Forty-five percent of voters approve of President Donald Trump’s plan to send more troops to Afghanistan, while 41 percent are opposed, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.
Here are the survey’s highlights:
- 68 percent of Republicans say they support Trump’s plan to increase troops in Afghanistan and 38 percent say the U.S. is winning that war.
- 30 percent of Democrats approve of Trump’s plan to send more troops and 19 percent say the U.S. is winning the war in Afghanistan.
- 40 percent of voters approve of the job Trump is doing as president, compared to 55 percent who disapprove
The poll also shows more voters oppose a government shutdown to force Congress to fund a wall on the border with Mexico:
- 28 percent of all those polled say they support a government shutdown, while 61 percent oppose it.
"Fifty percent of Trump voters support a shutdown over the wall, and 40 percent oppose that proposition," said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult's co-founder and chief research officer. "Given how strong opposition is on the left, it’s not clear this is a winning issue for Trump to focus on."
The poll, conducted Aug. 24-28, surveyed 1,999 voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
