Far more Americans said they believe former FBI Director James Comey as opposed to President Donald Trump in a new survey.

The results of the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Friday show 45 percent of Americans are more likely to believe Comey, while 22 percent said the same about Trump.

The question was regarding what took place during meetings between the pair this year and the circumstances around Comey's dismissal.

Trump fired Comey in May and he has faced an onslaught of backlash over that move because of the Russia investigation.

Other findings in the survey results:

  • 76 percent of Democrats are more likely to believe Comey, while 50 percent of Republicans are more likely to believe Trump.
  • 21 percent said they don't believe either man.
  • 8 percent said they believe both men.
  • 46 percent disapprove of Trump firing Comey, while 27 percent approve of it.
  • 53 percent said Russia interfered with the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
