Just 17 percent of Americans approve of the healthcare bill put forward by Senate Republicans, according to the latest Marist poll.
The results, according to Marist, based on what Americans have read or heard about the Better Care Reconciliation Act:
- 55 percent of Americans overall disapprove.
- 24 percent have not heard enough to form an opinion.
- 35 percent of Republicans approve.
- 13 percent of Independents approve.
"With numbers like these, it's not surprising the Republican leadership in Congress is having a difficult time building consensus," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
Further, nearly half of those surveyed said they would like to see changes made to the Affordable Care Act — Obamacare — to make it better.
Those results, according to Marist:
- 46 percent said change Obamacare so it does more.
- 25 percent said repeal Obamacare completely.
- 17 percent said let it stand.
- 53 percent of Republicans said repeal completely.
- 64 percent of Democrats said change it so it does more.
- Just 25 percent of Democrats surveyed want to see Obamacare remain as it is.
The Marist poll surveyed 1,205 adults from June 21-25. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
