More people would vote for Democrats than Republicans on a generic ballot ahead of the 2018 midterm elections, according to a Wednesday Economist/YouGov poll.

The results:

  • 44 percent of those who took the poll said they would choose Democratic candidates in their districts if the election were today.
  • 36 percent said they would choose Republican candidates if the election were today.
  • 14 percent said they were not sure.
  • 4 percent said they would not vote.
  • 3 percent said they would vote for some candidate besides a Democrat or a Republican.

More than half of those who took the poll are not pleased with the direction the country is moving in.

  • 52 percent said the country was moving in the wrong direction.
  • 34 percent said the U.S. was moving in the right direction.
  • 14 percent said they were not sure.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 24-26 among 1,500 adults in the U.S., with a margin of error of 3 percentage points, according to the Economist/YouGov poll.

A CNN poll on Dec. 20 showed Democrats with an 18-point lead over Republicans on a generic ballot.
