The improved economy has resulted in a 40 percent approval rating for President Donald Trump — his best showing in seven months, according to a Quinnipiac Poll released Wednesday.

The poll showed:

  • 40 percent of American voters approve of the job Trump is doing — the highest since a poll taken June 29, 2017.
  • 55 percent disapprove of his performance.
  • 48 percent say Trump is more responsible for the economic growth than former President Barack Obama.
  • 51 percent approve of how Trump is handling the economy, versus 43 percent who don't. That's his best score on the economy since taking office.
  • 75 percent of American voters say they are in good or excellent shape financially.
  • 47 percent disapprove of the Republican tax plan; 39 percent approve.

But he still gets low marks on immigration, foreign policy, and how he handles classified information.

  • 57 percent disapprove of Trump's foreign policy efforts; 37 percent approve.
  • 58 percent disapprove of how he handles classified information; 32 percent approve.
  • 58 percent disapprove of his immigration policies; 39 percent approve.
  • 47 percent disapprove of the way he has handled taxes; 45 percent approve.
  • Voters contend Trump is doing more to divide the country than to unite it by 60 percent to 35 percent.
  • Voters are divided on whether Trump is a racist: 49 percent say he is; 46 percent say he is not.

There are wide gender, party and racial gaps on the racism question.

  • 85 percent of Republicans say he is not a racist, while 84 percent of Democrats say he is.
  • 51 percent of white voters say Trump is not a racist; 74 percent of black voters think he is a racist.

"The post State of the Union bump kicks in," assistant poll director Tim Malloy said in a statement. "And an attaboy on the economy doubles the pleasure for Donald Trump . . . But he's still nowhere near that magic 50 percent mark. Americans are feeling good about their personal finances, but we'll have to see whether the Wall Street plunge takes a toll on the guy in charge."

The telephone poll of 1,333 voters nationwide was conducted from Feb. 2 through Feb. 5. It has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
