A plurality of Americans say that blame for a government shutdown should be assigned to congressional Republicans and President Donald Trump, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The survey results:

  • 48 percent think Republicans and Trump would be to blame
  • 28 percent think Democrats would be to blame
  • 18 percent think both sides would be equally to blame

Nearly half of independent voters (46 percent) blame Trump and Republicans vs. 25 percent who blame Dems.

A similar poll published Thursday found a plurality of Americans blaming Democrats for the shutdown, 34 percent to 32 percent blaming Republicans. Just 21 percent would blame the president.

The Post-ABC poll was conducted Jan. 15-18 among a random sample of 1,005 adults with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
