More than 7 out of 10 voters favor legislation to protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, but not combined with funding for a border wall, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.
A plurality of Republican voters also support DACA legislation, but a majority do want to see it combined with the wall.
The results, according to Quinnipiac:
- 73 percent of voters overall favor DACA legislation;
- 49 percent of Republicans favor DACA legislation; 40 percent don't
- 49 percent of voters overall don't support a DACA-wall combo bill
- 39 percent of voters overall do support a DACA-wall combo
- 54 percent of Republicans support a DACA-wall combo
Hispanics are split 42-42 percent over a DACA-wall combo, while white voters (46 percent) and blacks (67 percent) are opposed to it, according to Quinnipiac.
Other results about immigration attitudes:
- 89 percent overall say legal immigration is good for the country
- 78 percent overall say immigration from diverse countries makes the U.S. better
- 76 percent overall say that country of origin shouldn't matter
"While Washington roils over what formula will bring sense to the raucous and ugly immigration debate, voters put it simply: Dreamers should be allowed to live the dream," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
However, if the government does shut down Friday, a plurality of voters would blame the Democrats over congressional Republicans or President Donald Trump.
Those results:
- 34 percent overall would blame Democrats
- 32 percent overall would blame Republicans
- 21 percent would blame Trump
- 31 percent of Independents would blame Republicans vs. 30 percent who would blame Democrats
The only subgroup that would blame Trump is blacks, at 51 percent.
From Jan. 12-16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,212 voters nationwide with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
