Just more than half of Republican voters say in a
new CNN/ORC poll that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz should drop out of the presidential race if he cannot win the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination.
Cruz already has reached the point that he cannot reach the number on the first of this summer's GOP convention, and he is bargaining on front-runner Donald Trump not hitting the number either so the convention is forced into a second vote. Cruz has been wrangling to get Trump delegates to switch their votes to him on a second vote.
Here are the results of the poll:
Among Republican voters: Should Cruz keep running if he can't win 1,237 delegates?
- Yes: 47 percent
- No: 52 percent
Voters also believe the November matchup will be Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton, the poll found.
Among all registered voters: Most likely to win the Republican nomination:
- Donald Trump: 84 percent
- Ted Cruz: 10 percent
- John Kasich: 3 percent
All voters: Most likely to win the Democratic nomination:
- Hillary Clinton: 85 percent
- Bernie Sanders: 12 percent
Republican voters are more likely to see this year's divisive election as hurting party unity in the fall.
Among Republican voters:
Republican Party is …
- United: 7 percent
- Divided But Will Unite: 41 percent
- Divided But Will Not Unite: 49 percent
Among Democratic voters:
Democratic Party is …
- United: 30 percent
- Divided But Will Unite: 46 percent
- Divided And Will Not Unite: 23 percent
The poll was conducted April 28-May 1 by telephone and talked to a random sample of 1,001 adults. There were 405 Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents and 406 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents who are registered to vote.
The margin of error of both samples is plus-or-minus 5 percent.
