President Donald Trump's approval rating has sunk to a new low of 38 percent, according to the latest NBC News/The Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday.
"This is his worst showing of his young presidency so far," says Hart Research Associates' Fred Yang, a Democratic pollster who conducted the survey with Public Opinion Strategies' Bill McInturff, a Republican.
"Are we starting to see the fraying of the Trump base . . . after this week of [Republican] infighting?"
President Trump tweeted to the contrary Sunday morning, saying there is "anger and unity" after the revelations of the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee funding of the "fake dossier."
The 38 percent approval rating, down from 39 percent in May, pales in comparison to the past administrations in the fall of their first year, according to the report:
- Barack Obama: 51 percent.
- George W. Bush: 88 percent.
- Bill Clinton: 47 percent.
The poll results were decidedly partisan. While 58 percent overall disapprove of Trump's presidential performance, that number is just 17 percent disapproval among Republicans and a whopping 81 percent approve. Among Democrats, just seven percent approve, while 89 percent disapprove.
The poll was conducted Oct. 23-26, surveying 900 adults with a margin of error of plus-minus 3.3 percentage points.
