President Donald Trump tweeted that lies admitted by his former national security adviser Michael Flynn proved he had "nothing to hide" on claims of collusion with Russian officials during his 2016 presidential campaign.

"I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!" Trump tweeted Saturday.

Flynn has pled guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations he had with Russian officials. Trump fired Flynn after he misled Vice President Mike Pence about those conversations.

ABC News caused a firestorm when the network reported on Friday that Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about conversations Flynn had with Russian officials during Trump's campaign. The stock market took a downward turn upon the news and numerous other news agencies also reported the ABC News story.

The network later issued a correction, stating the conversations took place after Trump was elected president during his transition into office.
