The electorate is waiting to see if Donald Trump, the "change agent," will be a "good, safe pick," and it will become apparent through “message discipline” in Monday night’s first debate, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday on "The Cats Roundtable."
“Donald Trump is prepared,” Priebus told host John Catsimatidis. ”This is a change election. The polls go up while Donald Trump becomes steady. His message discipline is improved.
“He’s being consistent, mature, measured. All of those things give the electorate confidence. And as the electorate gets confident in the change candidate, then that’s when things improve for Donald Trump.”
The first debate with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has been hotly anticipated because of Trump’s dustups in the media and the primary debates with the slew of Republican presidential candidates, but Priebus said told the radio show his candidate has evolved to being more presidential.
“One of the biggest things with the debate tomorrow is that consistent, measured candidate on that stage,” Priebus said. “And I think that’s what you’re going to see from Donald Trump.”
Trump has been asked if he would “attack” Clinton on the issues, but he said he does not intend to. Regardless, it should be expected for Trump to delve into Clinton’s email scandal, which “gets more and more bizarre,” as Priebus told Catsimatidis.
“She has a lot of explaining to do,” Priebus said. “If she can’t be trusted to be secretary of state, how can she be trusted to be president?
“That’s an issue that’s on display here for the American people on Monday night … People don’t trust her.”
