The New York Police Department is looking to charge nine members of the right-wing group known as the "Proud Boys" with assault for their part in a violent brawl last Friday on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Additionally, the NYPD is pursuing charges against three anti-fascist protesters for their role in the altercation.
"We have nine individuals . . . that we feel confident we can sustain charges of riot or attempted assault," NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told a Monday news conference.
The incident took place near the Metropolitan Republican Club following a speech by Proud Boys leader Gavin McInnes. An altercation broke out about a block away around 8:30 p.m. ET. Video shows a group of men dressed in black fighting with another group of men who appear to be Proud Boys members.
The NYPD was criticized for arresting protesters but not any members of the far-right group.
"We will not tolerate any violence on the streets of New York City, and anyone, from any group, who participates in violence will be vigorously investigated," Shea said.
