New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's job approval rating continues to plunge with a historic 77 percent disapproval rating, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday.

The New Jersey poll notes it is the lowest approval rating for any governor in any state in more than 20 years.

Here's how the poll breaks down:

  • By a margin of 48-43 percent of those polled believe Christie personally ordered the Bridge-gate scandal, which forced a traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge in 2013.
  • 71 percent say he knew his aides were causing Bridge-gate and 56 percent say his potential involvement should be investigated further.
  • Just over half of those surveyed say Christie does not have strong leadership qualities.
  • 67 percent say he does not care about their needs and problems.
  • 71 percent say he is not honest and trustworthy.

"How the mighty have fallen. Remember four years ago, when Republican leaders were pleading with New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie to run for president and he looked like a sure thing for reelection — which he was?" said Maurice Carrol, assistant poll director.

"Now the neighbors have handed him the most dubious of honors, the lowest approval rating ever measured for a governor in the states surveyed by the Quinnipiac University Poll.

"The governor's job approval numbers get worse every time anyone looks. The last time we looked — May 18 — he had a 64 - 29 percent disapproval rating," Carroll added.

The poll also found:

  • New Jersey voters approve of the job President Barack Obama is doing by 56-36 percent.
  • President-elect Donald Trump received a 38-51 percent negative rating from those polled.
  • Democratic Sen. Cory Booker received a 56 percent job approval rating — his highest score ever.
