Democrat Ralph Northam is leading Republican Ed Gillespie by 17 points in the latest poll of the Virginia governor's race.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, released Monday, shows Northam up 53-36 percent. Libertarian Cliff Hyra trails far behind at 3 percent.

Northam, the current lieutenant governor, held steady from the past Quinnipiac poll Oct. 18. Gillespie, a former aide to President George W. Bush, dropped 3 points.

The poll also shows Virginia's likely voters disapproved of the job President Donald Trump is doing by 60-34 percent. Democrat Hillary Clinton won the state in last year's presidential election.

Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, cited Trump's low numbers in the state as part of Gillespie's problem.

"In 2014, Republican Ed Gillespie came oh-so-close to upsetting Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, at least in part because 2014 was a Republican year and Gillespie benefited from the national pro-GOP mood," Brown said. "But with President Donald Trump's approval ratings in the dumpster in Virginia and in the nation, this year the shoe is on the other foot for Gillespie."

But with just more than a week before the vote, Northam's campaign is not getting overconfident with the poll's results, CNN reported.

Other polls have shown the margin much closer, a source close to Northam's campaign told CNN. That includes a Wason Center at Christopher Newport University tracking poll that shows Northam with a 7-point lead.

The Real Clear Politics average of recent polls has Northam ahead just 3.3 points.

And a Hampton University Center for Public Policy poll last week put Gillespie up 8 points.

The Quinnipiac poll was conducted Oct. 25-29 and talked to 916 likely voters by cell and landline phone. It has a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.
