Two candidates from the Midwest will be the first Muslim women in Congress, according to a CNN projection.
Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party's nominee, secured their seats in Democratic districts.
Tlaib was endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, the group to which Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 29-year-old projected to win the 14th Congressional District seat in New York.
Omar will also be the first Somali-American member of Congress, after coming to the United States as a refugee two decades ago.
Omar is taking the seat vacated by Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., while Tlaib will fill the seat occupied by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., who resigned last year.
