Republican David Perdue has won the U.S. Senate race in Georgia, CNN projected, clinching an important prize for Republicans hoping to take majority control of the chamber.
Perdue, 64, a former chief executive of retailer Dollar General who is a newcomer to politics, outpolled Democrat Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, as well as Libertarian candidate Amanda Swafford. The seat in the conservative state is currently held by Republican Saxby Chambliss, who is retiring.
