The Republican Platform Committee shot down a proposal to soften the party's official stance on gay marriage Monday.
During a meeting in Cleveland, which will host the Republican National Convention next week, the committee voted against changing its view despite pleas from an openly gay Washington, D.C. female delegate.
"I'm not here asking you to endorse my own constitutional rights … I'm only asking you to recognize that many Republicans, many of the Republicans that sent us here to do work this week in shaping our party's platform, agree with me, and we should not be excluded from our party," said Rachel Hoff,

The proposal was denied in a show-of-hands vote. Earlier Monday, a Republican subcommittee also declined to advance the proposal, according to
The Hill.
The Republican party's platform is updated every four years at the presidential convention. The committee is chaired by Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming.
