There must be a face-to-face interview between President Donald Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller regarding the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia in the 2016 presidential election, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., told CNN's "New Day" on Monday.
Blumenthal, who is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said "unquestionably, there has to be that kind of face-to-face interview. The timing is important, because the special counsel needs to have as many facts and as much evidence before he has that face-to-face interview with the president of the United States."
Trump's legal team is reportedly talking about possible formats in anticipation Mueller will want to interview the president, including written responses to questions instead of a formal sit-down, according to NBC News.
Blumenthal said he expects there will be more indictments and convictions in Mueller's probe, because "the evidence accumulating against individuals within the White House, within the administration, the mounting evidence of obstruction of justice that's public, and we have no idea all of what is available to the special counsel."
Mueller's investigation has so far led to two indictments and two guilty pleas, according to The Hill.
Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his former associate, Richard Gates, were indicted last year on money laundering and tax fraud charges, while former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and former policy adviser George Papadopoulos both pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
Blumenthal also told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" he is very disappointed by the action of the Republican majority on the Senate Judiciary Committee to go after Christopher Steele [the former British spy who wrote the discredited Russia-Trump dossier], "someone who has reported wrongdoing . . . and not committed it."
The senator said the actions of the Republicans appear as if they are "more designed to deflect from the investigation we should be conducting into collusion by the Trump campaign with Russian meddling."
