GOP Gov. Rick Scott said Thursday "everything's on the table" as state officials consider how to prevent another mass shooting in the wake of the slaughter at a South Florida school where 17 people were killed.

In an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room," Scott was pressed on whether he would commit to work to tighten gun laws in Florida.

"I'll be stronger than that: Everything's on the table; I'm going to look at every way that we can make sure our kids are safe," he said, adding: "I'm going to do whatever I can do to keep these kids safe. I'm going to talk about every issue to keep these kids safe.

"It's a lot of things," he continued. "It's looking at who should have guns. Should individuals with mental illness have guns. What can we do to create more safety in our schools. What can we do to make it easier for our children and make them feel comfortable to report things. It's not one thing. It's all these things put together."

The accused 19-year-old shooter, Nikolas Cruz, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., had a history of mental health treatment.

He also bought his AR-15 rifle when he was 18, authorities said. Florida requires a person to be 21 to buy a gun.

"I think it's legitimate question," he said. "We have to go back and look at these things and say to ourselves, our primary goal is school safety. . . . I want to make sure we don't ever trample on anybody's constitutional rights, but we've got to focus on keeping these kids safe."
