Donald Trump has done "a good job" unifying Republicans, even if he did tell Fox News' Sean Hannity Tuesday night that he doesn't need the endorsements of establishment party members, Republican National Committee Communications Director and Chief Strategist Sean Spicer said Wednesday.
"He has done a good job unifying the party, if you look where we were a couple weeks ago, we are in a good place vis-a-vis the Democrats," Spicer told Fox News' Bill Hemmer on the
"America's Newsroom" program. "They are fractured. They have a socialist left-wing aspect of the party that Bernie Sanders represents saying they will not go back in line and support Hillary Clinton if she is nominee."
On the "Hannity" program, Trump said that "the only thing that matters" to him is the endorsement of the people, not politicians or even past presidents.
And while former Presidents George W. and George H.W. Bush have said they will not support Trump, several of his former fellow GOP candidates, like Sen. Marco Rubio and Rick Santorum, have rallied around him, said Spicer.
"I think that is a good thing," he told Hemmer. "I will take where we are versus Democrats any day of the week."
Spicer said he also thinks the Cleveland GOP convention will be a not only unifying event, but it will "be electric."
"I think the world will see a party energized, a party that is unified and a party with solutions that this country desperately needs," said Spicer.
He also does not believe the party is as fractured as some are saying.
"It is great cocktail conversation for folks to have but when you look at numbers, when you look at reality it is just not there," said Spicer. "The Democrats have a much bigger problem on their hands than Republicans."
But, he admitted that Trump is a "different kind of candidate" as he is a successful businessman, not a politician.
