More than 200 lawmakers, including two Democrats, have asked the Supreme Court to revisit, and potentially overturn, the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, reports CBS News.
Thirty-nine Republican senators, two House Democrats, and 166 House Republicans signed an amicus brief Thursday urging the court to uphold a Louisiana law severely restricting abortion, June Medical Services LLC v. Gee, arguing the right to an abortion is "unworkable" and Roe v. Wade and similar cases upholding abortion "should be considered, and if appropriate, overruled."
June challenged a Louisiana law that would essentially shut down every abortion clinic in the state. A lower court found in Louisiana's favor.
The brief stated that the 207 lawmakers "have a special interest in the correct interpretation, application, and enforcement of health and safety standards for elective abortion enacted by the People of the States they represent."
The two Democrats who signed on were Reps. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., and Collin Peterson, D-Minn.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments for June Medical Services v. Gee in March. It will be the first major case relating to abortion rights that Trump appointees Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh will weigh in on.
