Embattled Fox News CEO Roger Ailes is the focus of an "active" rumor that he could become the campaign manager for GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, a biographer of media mogul Rupert Murdoch asserts.

In a story for The Hollywood Reporter, contributor and Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff writes Ailes' reported imminent departure from Fox News has created almost as much buzz on the floor of the Republican National Convention as the party's standard-bearer.

"The rumor of Ailes replacing Paul Manafort as campaign manager is an active one, with a further rumor putting Trump in favor of this and his children against it," Wolff writes, even as negotiations continues between Ailes and Murdoch's sons on a transition at Fox News.

Trump famously waged a battle with Fox News and high-profile anchor Megyn Kelly for months until the two came to terms last May — and Kelly's allegation of Ailes' sexual harassment came as his future at Fox News was already shake by a harassment suit filed by fired anchor Gretchen Carlson

According to Wolff, negotiations at Fox News on Ailes' future now have been "reportedly slowed not just by Ailes' war-like posture, but because Rupert Murdoch is in the middle of it . . . changing the terms of the negotiation on an hourly basis."

Manafort was moved into the top campaign position when Trump dumped controversial campaign manager Corey Lewandowski after a tumultuous stretch marked by missteps and infighting.
