Sixty-six percent of Americans favor an independent commission to investigate possible links between President Donald Trump's campaign advisers and the Russian government, compared to 29 percent who are opposed to the idea, a Quinnipiac University poll reveals.
Here are the survey highlights:
- 65 percent of those polled believe alleged Russian interference in the presidential election is either "very important" or "somewhat important," compared to 32 percent who said it is" not so important" or "not important at all."
- 63 percent say the they are "very concerned" or "somewhat concerned" about Trump's relationship with Russia, while 35 percent voiced little or no concern.
- 59 percent say they disapprove of the way Trump has handled U.S. policy toward Russia, compared to 27 percent who approve of it.
The poll also found voters opposed the spending cuts listed in Trump's proposed federal budget. Here is how that part of the survey breaks down:
- 70 percent are against eliminating the Corporation for Public Broadcast, while 25 percent approve of it.
- 66 percent say it is a "bad idea" to eliminate funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, while 27 percent say it is a good proposal.
- 64 percent say starting to fund a wall on the Mexican border is a "bad idea," while 35 percent support it. Republicans, however, support the wall by 74-24 percent.
The poll did find support for increasing funding for health services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (85-13 percent) and for additional military spending (58-39 percent)
"It's a rousing yes for healing the vets and growing the military," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. "But when it comes to cutting Public TV, the arts, after school programs and scientific research to improve the environment, it's a stern 'hands off' from voters."
Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,056 voters nationwide from March 16 to 21. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
