Sarah Palin says Rep. Maxine Waters has taken "a direct shot" at President Donald Trump's supporters by questioning their patriotism.

"Maxine strikes again," Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential running mate of John McCain, wrote Wednesday on her website.

"Maxine Waters has made it clear she has no intention of treating President Trump with the slightest amount of fairness or dignity. She has already called for his impeachment several times without any evidence and is now taking a direct shot at his supporters."

On Monday, Waters, a California Democrat, addressed the House to express her displeasure with Trump and his supporters.

"I oppose this president, I do not honor this president, I do not respect this president. He has disrespected the office and offended so many people across this country and around the world," Waters, the most senior of the 12 black women who serve in Congress, told her fellow lawmakers.

She said African Americans always "stand up for America, oftentimes when others who think they are more patriotic, who say they are more patriotic, do not.

"When we fight against this president, and we point out how dangerous he is for this society and for this country, we're fighting for the democracy. We're fighting for America.

"We're saying to those who say they're patriotic but they've turned a blind eye to the destruction that he's about to cause this country, 'You're not nearly as patriotic as we are.'"
