Sen. Scott Brown: Cruz Needs to Back Trump to Unite Party

Republicans planning to skip the convention in Cleveland over Donald Trump's lead will "miss being a part of history," and if Ted Cruz truly wants a unified party, he'll get behind Trump's campaign, former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown said Wednesday.

"You have to be part of the process or shame on you complaining after it's over," Brown, who has endorsed Trump, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" host Bill Hemmer. "I'm hopeful they go and hopeful they ultimately get behind the front-runner and hopefully the eventual nominee, take back the White House, keep the Senate and put genie back in the bottle with the stuff president [has been] doing [these] last few years."

And while Brown has been acting as a Trump surrogate for several months, he said Wednesday he also speaks for the GOP, and he'd also support Cruz or Kasich should they come out with the nomination.

"I was one of [Trump's] first supporters but I'm also a realist," Brown said. "I understand what we need to do to take back the country, to take back our party, re-establish trust with our allies, fear with our foes. We need I believe somebody who is not like the others, someone who is a real outsider."

Brown said he does hope that Trump can work through his unfavorable ratings, as he and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton "have the two most-unfavorable ratings of anyone running."

However, the former senator said he thinks Trump still "has a chance to rehabilitate himself" while Clinton's numbers "are more locked in stone."

The numbers would change if Cruz unites the party, said Brown, and he hopes that will happen because Cruz "has been mathematically eliminated. They're only waiting for a convention that will basically be contentious."

Brown also predicts that this coming week and the Super Tuesday primaries next week will be big for Trump, and that he will have the delegates to clinch the nomination.

"With respect, there is nobody there that will vote for Kasich because they're all Cruz or Trump," said Brown. "I'm hopeful that they will get together. Will it be a Trump-Cruz ticket to bring those two factions banging heads to unite them? We'll see."

And meanwhile, Brown said he does like Cruz and considers him a friend, but he is "mathematically eliminated" from getting the delegates he needs to clinch the nomination.

"They are three good people doing the people's business and laying it out on the line," Brown said of the remaining candidates. "I commend each and every one of them. Any one of them would make a better president than Hillary Clinton. That is the choice we have. "
