Scott Brown says he made his decision to run for Senate from New Hampshire on a Valentine's Day date with his wife.
In an interview with WMUR-TV,
Brown said he and his wife, Gail Huff, were having dinner at The Wentworth Inn in Jackson, N.H., when he complained about what was happening in Washington.
"She finally looked at me and said, 'Honey, stop complaining. I'm in, the kids are in, go take back our country, go win this thing and go down there and solve the problems that this country needs you to solve,'" Brown said.
Politico notes that
the decision came a month before Fox News Channel suspended Brown's contract as a paid contributor. The channel suspends contracts with its contributors when they announce they are seeking political office.
But in Brown's case, the network actually announced a renewal of his contract just a few days after he now says he made a decision to run. A month later, Fox suspended Brown's contract after he made an official announcement. But during that time Fox's own Greta Van Susteren tweeted that Brown was definitely running.
Brown
denied that report to Politico at the time.
Brown previously served one term in the Senate from Massachusetts, gaining an unexpected GOP victory for the seat in 2010 following the death of longtime Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy. But he lost his re-election bid to Democrat Elizabeth Warren two years later.
Brown
moved to New Hampshire in December, but denied speculation at the time he was aiming to unseat Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. Instead, he insisted, he was just moving back to be near family.
Most observers believed, however, that Brown was indeed seeking to run against Shaheen. He was even asked repeatedly about it on Fox News Channel appearances.
