With Democrats vying to take control of the Senate, new data indicates the party has outspent Republicans in nine states where there are competitive Senate races.

Axios obtained the numbers, which show that Democrats have spent more than Republicans on Senate races this year in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Montana, and North Carolina.

In Alaska, another state with a competitive Senate race, independents are outspending Republicans by a slim margin.

From January through September, Democrats have spent $327 million on Senate races in the abovementioned states, compared to the $259 million Republicans have spent. North Carolina features the most expensive race; money spent on Democrat Cal Cunningham totals $116 million, while Republicans have spent $78 million on Sen. Thom Tillis.

Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats to Democrats' 47. If Democrat Joe Biden wins the presidential election, the party only needs to take three Senate seats because Biden's running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, would serve as vice president and would cast a vote to break any ties in a Senate vote.
