Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., is working on a piece of legislation that would protect Dreamers from being deported under President-elect Donald Trump.
According to Politico, Graham and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are joining forces to write a bill that would keep more than 740,000 young illegal immigrants in the United States. In 2012, President Barack Obama took executive action to allow Dreamers, who came to the U.S. as children of illegal immigrants, to stay.
"The worst outcome is to repeal the legal status that these kids have," the South Carolina Republican told Politico. "Whether you agree with them having it or not, they've come out of the shadows.
"It's going to be basically, if you have legal status, you'll continue legal status. I think it would pass overwhelmingly."
Trump as vowed to crack down on illegal immigration and said he will deport the 2-3 million illegal immigrants with a criminal record currently living in the U.S. It is still unclear if he will take action on the other undocumented people after he takes office in January.
Trump nominated Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., as his attorney general, which has caused worry among illegal immigrants in the U.S.
