New Hampshire's Shaheen First Target of 'Scary' Obamacare Ad

The GOP's battle blueprint to oust Democrats in the 2014 midterm elections has hit the airwaves in the form of an assault on Obamacare and incumbent New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

The 30-second spot by Ending Spending, a group promoting fiscal restraint, features Shaheen on the Senate floor, repeating the president's now infamous line "if you like your insurance you can keep it." A narrator warns that Shaheen "didn't tell the truth" on healthcare and notes that so far 20,000 people in New Hampshire have lost their insurance and New Hampshire only offers one provider on the state's individual market.

The ad concludes with the damning line, "Next November, if you like your senator, you can keep her. If you don't, you know what to do."

The ad, which is running on cable and broadcast television, cost Ending Spending in the low six figures, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Tying Democrats to Obamacare is expected to be the recurring theme of the upcoming elections, and a new poll shows that Republicans still have a long way to catch Shaheen, who is seeking a second term.

The survey from American Research Group finds Shaheen with a 10 point lead over former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown who has moved to the Granite State and is widely expected to run, with 14 percent undecided.

Shaheen holds an even larger lead — 50-32 percent — over another potential candidate, former Sen. Bob Smith.

Washington Post journalist Chris Cillizza predicts the Shaheen ad will be "replicated endlessly" by Republicans across the country next year. He calls it an ad "that every Democrat should be scared of."

"Add it all up and you have a very scary situation for Shaheen — and any other Democrat, which is almost all of them, on the record supporting the [Affordable Care Act]," he writes. "Get used to this ad. You are going to see it thousands of times — in various forms — before 2014 is over."
