Joe Arpaio has lost his bid for a seventh term as sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz.
The 84-year-old Arpaio has held the office for 23 years, often with controversy, including housing inmates in tents and putting them in pink underwear. He most recently was accused of racial profiling in fighting illegal immigration.
Arpaio was a supporter of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and has been a fierce border enforcement advocate.
He was defeated by Democrat Paul Penzone.
The Los Angeles Times attributed the loss to shifting demographics in the once-conservative area that now has a larger Hispanic population.
