Americans are showing more favorable ratings in support for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is in charge of special counsel Robert Mueller and his investigation into 2016 election meddling and potential Trump campaign collusion, according to the latest CNN poll.

A majority of Americans, 53 percent, believe President Donald Trump should not fire Rosenstein, while just 18 percent believe he should be fired, CNN reported.

Rosenstein has reportedly joked about using the 25th Amendment to impeach President Trump on mentally and physical fitness, along with allegedly talking about sneaking a recording device into the White House to surreptitiously record the president.

After Rosenstein has publicly denied those reports and met with President Trump, the president has said he would prefer to keep Rosenstein as deputy attorney general under AG Jeff Sessions, who has recused himself from the Russia investigation. That is about as far as the approval of American adults go in CNN's poll.

As for approval ratings of Mueller and President Trump, the CNN survey poll is far more on the side of Mueller:

  • 48 percent approve of the job Mueller is doing, while 36 percent disapprove.
  • 33 percent approve of the job President Trump is doing, while 54 percent disapprove.

The CNN poll was conducted by SSRS and surveyed 1,009 American adults Oct. 4-7 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
