Steve Russell on Gun Control: 'You Can't Just Go After the Tools'

Oklahoma Republican Rep. Steve Russell, an Army veteran and owner of a firearm manufacturing business, said Thursday that restrictions on guns, accessories and "tools" won't stop mass shootings.

Russell referenced the recent shooting in Las Vegas, but denied the position of gun control advocates that seeking to crackdown on firearms, tools and accessories is the wrong way to stop more from happening.

"Here we have an individual who hauled hundreds of pounds of equipment in, who set up cameras, who went through elaborate detail, and yet he was not viewed as a threat," Russell said on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" Thursday morning. "To get to a solution, you can't just go after the tools."

He added that countries with strict gun laws such as Norway and France still have had deadly mass shootings.

"One of the ideas that I'm promoting is to form a task force with experts, where we can work on the issue with people that are actually qualified, that know the laws, that know the issues," Russell said, conceding that a ban on bump stocks and other devices could be discussed, "but going after the implements is not the solution."
