Alaska Republican senatorial candidate Dan Sullivan told enthusiastic supporters at his Anchorage campaign headquarters that it might be "a long night" and it could even be a "long week" until all the ballots were counted but that "there is no question" he will defeat Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Begich, according to
KTUU Television.
With 243 of 441 precincts reporting at 6 a.m. EST, Sullivan had 49.74 percent of the vote against 44.27 for Begich. About 8,500 ballots separated the two, according to KTUU.
Much of the rural Alaska vote has not yet reported.
Meanwhile, a ballot measure on decriminalizing marijuana for recreational use was heading for passage leading 52 percent to 48 percent with 86 percent of precincts , counted, according to the
Alaska Dispatch.
