Time is running out and support continues to wane for the Texas gubernatorial campaign of Democrat Wendy Davis,
Politico reports.
Her campaign's sharp decline was marked by her hometown newspaper endorsing her increasingly popular opponent, Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is expected to win big on Nov. 4,
according to breitbart.com.
While Davis rose to national prominence during her 11-hour, pink-sneaker-clad filibuster before the Texas Senate in Austin over an anti-abortion bill, her missteps in the governor's race have dimmed her star wattage.
Most recently, she drew outrage over a campaign ad that featured a wheelchair. Abbott, who was paralyzed years ago in a tree-fall accident, uses such a device to get around. In the television spot, Davis suggests that Abbott, who received a settlement after his accident, has worked against others who might need similar compensation.
After the spot ran, Davis' support dipped to 32 percent, "her lowest total in a poll in 2014,"
National Review Online noted.
Abbott, for his part, said at his campaign headquarters this weekend that he was "disappointed" in the comparison,
The Washington Post reported.
"We're running to be governor of Texas, and it’s our obligation to cast a vision for what we will do for Texas," Abbott said. "I believe we need to be focused on showing how we are going to make Texas No. 1, how we will build up this state, not how we’ll tear other people down. So it's disappointing when you see someone focus their time and attention on trying to tear someone down."
As the clock ticks toward Nov. 4, and as early voting is in full swing in Texas, Davis continues to keep her game face on, campaigning with state representative candidate Leigh Bailey, Politico noted, and attempting to appeal to her base.
"When I ran in 2008 in my [state] Senate district, which was drawn by a Republican and was represented by a long-incumbent Republican, everyone said it could not be done," Davis said on the stump, according to Politico. "And we proved them wrong, and we’re going to prove them wrong for Leigh Bailey and for this election as well."
A
RealClearPolitics polling average through Oct. 16 had Abbott ahead by a 12.3 percent spread, leading Davis 50.3 to 38 percent.
