Vice President Kamala Harris is the "worst pick" President Joe Biden could have made to head up the efforts at the southern border, former acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tom Homan said Thursday.

"When President Biden says she is the most qualified, I mean, seriously?" Homan, now a Fox News contributor, said on "Fox and Friends." "What color is the sky in his world? Because you can't get a worse pick."

Harris "supports sanctuary cities" and while she was a senator, "wrote legislation to reward those who illegally enter the United States," said Homan.

Ha also said the vice president "vilified" the men and women working for Customs and Border Protection and said they were "mistreating" immigrants and she wants to "abolish ICE. She compared immigration officers to the KKK during a Senate hearing, and you want to put her in charge of immigration enforcement on the border? I couldn't think of a worse choice."

Biden made the announcement about Harris on Wednesday, and a senior administration official said later the decision was made as a display of trust in the vice president's leadership and because of her law enforcement background as the one-time attorney general of California.

She is expected to meet in upcoming weeks with leaders in Mexico and in the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, from where most migrants coming across the U.S. border travel.

Harris has also been tasked with developing strategies to address the root causes of migration, including the lack of jobs and corruption in Central America.

But Homan said Thursday there are far more qualified people who should have been put in charge of the effort at the border, including Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott.

"He spent his whole career on the border," said Homan. "He could fix it, if you give him the power to change the policies that need to be changed and let him do his job, that's the guy, not some politician."

He also questioned Harris' plans to travel to Mexico and Central America to speak to their leaders rather than talking with the command of the Border Patrol.

"They know how to fix this, the same way President (Donald) Trump fixed it," said Homan. "If Joe Biden said today 'I'm going to reestablish the remain in Mexico program effective immediately,' border crossings would go down 75% in the 24 hour period."

Meanwhile, Trump had already come to agreements with the Northern Triangle countries and Mexico, but Biden "destroyed them in two weeks," said Homan.

"If they would have stuck to the Trump playbook, Joe Biden would have had the most successful border security," said Homan. "They tore down everything Trump. This is what they got today. Again, not by accident, not by incompetence, but by design. This is what open borders look like and Joe Biden won an election and sold out to the progressive left to get an open border. He knew exactly what he was doing when he made these promises."
