Family Research Council President Tony Perkins is pushing for the Republican Party to include conversion therapy to its official stance on issues.
According to
Time, Perkins tried to have the GOP's Platform Committee add explicit language to its platform that would have supported the controversial practice that aims to turn gay people straight.
After meeting with party officials, Perkins changed the language to: "We support the right of parents to determine the proper treatment or therapy, for their minor children."
The measure passed in the subcommittee but it fell through at the committee level, reports Time.
The GOP's Platform Committee has been meeting this week ahead of next week's Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The group convenes every four years to form the party's official stance on issues.
On Monday, the committee
voted down a measure to soften the party's stance on gay marriage. Earlier Tuesday, the body voted to change some of its official language on
trade.
