FBI Director James Comey is not to blame for the latest probe into emails related to Hillary Clinton, Rep. Trey Gowdy told "Fox and Friends."
"To the best of my recollection, Director Comey did not tell her to set up her own private email server, he did not tell her to lie about almost every aspect of the email, he didn't tell Huma Abedin not to turn over all of her devices," he said.
The South Carolina Republican, who served as the chairman of the committee investigating Benghazi, referred to Clinton aide Abedin's estranged husband Anthony Weiner.
"And he didn't tell Anthony Weiner to sext with underage girls. So I don't know how Jim Comey is responsible for any of this."
The FBI director told Congress on Oct. 28 that the FBI had learned about more emails that could be relevant to the Clinton email investigation. In July, he had said that while Clinton was "extremely careless," he did not believe a prosecutor could bring a case against her.
Comey, after telling Congress the investigation was done, found new evidence, Gowdy said.
"So new evidence came to light. He could have either sat on it and been criticized afterwards for not telling us, or he could have done the transparent thing and said, look, I'm notifying you."
The director did not mention Clinton or the "substance of the emails," Gowdy said. "He just said the investigation has re-initiated."
Democrats have criticized the timing of Comey's announcement, close to the presidential election.
Comey is under pressure from within the FBI, according to Ed Klein, who reported that morale among FBI agents is low.
"They felt that he betrayed them and brought disgrace on the bureau by letting Hillary off with a slap on the wrist," Klein's source said.
