President Donald Trump Saturday slammed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as "not a good leader" who has "gone very far left."

"It's tough to work with him," Trump told Jeanine Pirro on Fox News in an interview broadcast on Saturday. "I'm surprised – and I've known him for a long time."

President Trump and Schumer have traded barbs since last year's election, with the New York Democrat most recently bashing the president Tuesday for his firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Trump responded with a tweet ripping "Cryin' Chuck Schumer" for his attack, noting that he had called for Comey's firing over the Hillary Clinton email probe.

"He has gone very far left," President Trump told Pirro. "He doesn't have good control of his party.

"He's not a good leader."

He said that "it will be tough for me to work" with Democrats. "We'll see."

Trump looked forward to the congressional midterm elections next year in hopes of getting more Republicans elected, particularly to the Senate, to end partisan gridlock.

"Hopefully, what will happen is in 2018, we will elect some Republican senators because we have a margin of two.

"We will elect some more Republicans – and be able to do it without having to go through that situation with Schumer.

"Honestly, they just want to stop things," he told Pirro of Democrats. "They want to clog up the wheels.

"We can't let that happen."
