Congressional Democrats were excited and all on board with President Donald Trump's plan to spend $1 trillion on infrastructure when he first took office.
But now, Trump has completely lost that support; the president is expected to instead unveil his $200 billion plan after the New Year, and the other side isn't interested, Politico reports.
"They've gone from a trillion dollars to $200 billion that would be done with [public-private partnerships], and then Trump doesn't like [public-private partnerships], so it's $200 billion that [they] said last week would be cut from other domestic spending," Rep. Peter DeFazio, ranking on the transportation committee, told Politico.
Democrats aren't going to go for spending cuts, let alone local tax increases for the purpose of partnering with private entities to improve national transportation systems.
Even the chairman of the committee is scratching his head over what exactly the Trump administration is proposing to do.
"I gotta see exactly what they mean by it," Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Penn., told Politico. "Some of it sounds a little bit like devolution. And I've not talked to a single governor that wants the federal government not to have a role. It's a national transportation system."
Any bill would need 60 votes to pass in the Senate, where Republicans' majority drops to 51 after the first of the year.
