GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump said in an interview aired Sunday he expects to reach the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination before the July convention in Cleveland.

"We want to get to the 1,237, and I think we will have a very good chance to get there. We expect to get there, actually," Trump said on "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York.

"Our target date is June 7, but our goal is in the middle of May to be the presumptive nominee," Trump's newly hired convention manager Paul Manafort has said.

Trump has been hammering Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on a comment he made in January hitting "New York values." Trump continued his attack on Sunday, leading up to New York's April 19 primary.

"Cruz is a guy who hates New York," Trump told host John Catsimatidis. "He hates New Yorkers, and he's trying to put a different spin on it."

Trump noted that Cruz vote against Hurricane Sandy disaster relief, adding, "He's a very anti-New York guy, and I guarantee if he ever made it to president, New York would forget about the federal government."

On Ohio Gov. John Kasich being his running mate, Trump said, "It's too early to talk about vice president, but I like him."
