President Donald Trump on Tuesday took to Twitter to reassert his commitment to building the border wall, rebuffing reports from the "fake media" that his position has changed.

Trump's tweet came 1 hour after an NBC News report that said the president was willing to forego $1 billion in 2017 funding for the wall to avoid a budget standoff that could result in the shutdown of the federal government.

Trump also reportedly told a gathering of conservative media Monday that he's willing to kick the can on border wall funding to September, when 2018 budget negotiations begin.

Democrats have been steadfast in their pledge to force a shutdown if funding for the wall makes its way into the budget. Many Republicans are lukewarm as well.

Congress must pass a budget before Friday to avoid a shutdown.
