President Donald Trump thanked Republican lawmakers in a Thursday morning tweet for their efforts in preventing a proposed FISA bill from passing on Wednesday.

“Thank you to our GREAT Republican Congressmen & Congresswomen on your incredibly important blockage last night of a FISA Bill that would just perpetuate the abuse that produced the Greatest Political Crime In the History of the U.S., the Russian Witch-Hunt. Fantastic Job!”

The bill would have renewed provisions used to investigate terrorism and espionage that expired in March. It would have also added oversight and restrictions to the U.S. government's ability to collect private information on Americans.

Trump threatened to veto the bill if it passed in a tweet just prior to the vote on Wednesday. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pulled the bill from being voted on after Trump’s veto threat.

Attorney General William Barr, who helped create the original bill, told Trump he did not like the latest version of the bill. He called on Trump to veto the bill saying the legislation was overreaching and could possibly weaken national security tools.

Republicans then passed the message onto GOP lawmakers not to support the measure.
